I am entering in a cooking show!!
Do cooking shows really need to use armed forces recipes for technical challenges?
The Great British Bakeoff technical challenge in Series 11 Episode 8 was 'Sussex Pond Pudding'. According to Pru Leith it's a suet pastry filled with butter and sugar, encasing a whole lemon. It reminded my Husband of a savoury Navy delicacy lovingly called, 'Babies Heads' which is in fact Steak and Kidney Pudding. A tasty comfort food delight for many of our armed forces.
I guess if you have a warped vivid imagination it does look a little like a babies head perhaps??
We thought it wouldn't be long before another Navy favourite would appear on a cooking show. But we were rather surprised to see Monica Galetti on Master Chef : The Professionals - Episode 13 Series 8 - cooking the much loved Navy breakfast 'Sh!t on a raft'. And no I cannot seem to type the correct spelling of this wonder food. Monica called it Devilled Kidneys, but if you look at the picture below I think the Navy description looks about right. It's certainly not something I fancy cooking now I have seen it.
So I started to think.... Hey , I could do this. I could enter the 2021 Master Chef competition and I could cook a much loved Navy dish 'Cheesy Hammy Eggy'.
It's one I have cooked for my Husband many times. He was a Radar artificer in the Navy working on the 909s, (which I am told sent the radar operators slightly mad as they were so complicated, which explains a lot.) But this is one of his favourite breakfasts and I think Greg, Monica and Marcus would love it.
If all else fails I can always make 'Crostini Variopinti' in the invention test, Yes you guessed it.... Baked beans on toast using tweezers to place each bean perfectly!
And of course I will have to be in episode 8, as that seems to be the one for armed forces technical recipes.
I guess now I have mentioned this Cheese, ham and egg on toast delight to my Husband I will have to make it for him for breakfast this weekend. Not that I mind, I love it too, but like a dash of worcestershire sauce on it. (Sacrilege!! I hear Navy personnel say) Well at least I didn't suggest Ketchup!
Do you know any strange or funny names for food.
Toad in the hole perhaps? Any more?
Comment below and lets make a list to send to GBBO and MC!
Until next time
